The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The holiday season is on its way, so the gifting season is upon us. The gifts we give children have the opportunity to foster healthy development in them or hinder their growth. There is no doubt that we all want to be givers whose gifts promote healthy development in children, but that is not always easy with the amount of child-related products that exist in the market today. Today I want to share with you 6 questions to ask yourself as you shop for gifts for your children this holiday season. These questions will help you decipher what products will promote healthy development in your child versus promote poor development.

  1. Is this toy age appropriate for my child?

  2. Does this toy serve any educational purposes?

  3. Does this toy give my child the freedom to be creative?

  4. Does this toy pose any danger to my child?

  5. Does this toy serve more than one purpose?

  6. Does this toy encourage cross-generational play?

If you answered no to the majority of the questions, then more than likely the toy you are pondering about getting for your child is not worth it. The gifts we give children have an impact on their overall development. As parents and caregivers, we should aim to give our children intentional gifts. When we choose to live with intent and give with purpose, we set our children down a path to not only be gift receivers but become gifts that keep on giving.

The first step to overcoming something is understanding that it exists. Today you have become part of the few people who understand that there are problems with giving children gifts without a thorough understanding of how the gift will impact them. Today you have become part of the few people who will be more intentional about the gifts they give children. Today you have become part of the few people who want to gift with a purpose.
